One of the best aspects of working on historic homes is the opportunity to preserve their unique character and architectural heritage. From Victorian-era villas to Georgian townhouses, each property carries a distinct charm. As an interior designer, my aim is to work with the historical elements of a building whilst creating a modern space for contemporary life.
2. Modernising with Sensitivity
While maintaining the heritage is crucial, period buildings often require functional updates to suit contemporary lifestyles. Balancing modern amenities with a properties traditional layout demands careful consideration. It is important to me as an interior designer in Brighton to preserve the flow and essence of the original architecture whilst integrating smart solutions for modern living. A recent project in the prestigious Brunswick Square on Hove seafront, involved renovation of grade 1 listed apartment restoring original features whilst offering the best of modern living facilities.
3. Unearthing Hidden Gems
Restoring a period property can uncover hidden treasures, both architectural and decorative. Original features such as ornate cornices, intricate ceiling roses and original floor tiles can be concealed and it is always a pleasure to breathe new life into any original features uncovered.
4. Materials and Finishes
Selecting the right materials and finishes for any period property project is pivotal to harmonising past and present. Restoration of original woodwork and cornicing plasterwork, a considered heritage palette for paintwork and complimentary textiles add warmth and character to interiors. Combining these with modern finishes and styling on fixtures and furnishings, create a space that celebrates history while offering comfort and convenience.
A redesign and renovation of a period building in Kemptown Brighton recently, allowed me to explore materials and finishes with the project including new design schemes for bathroom, kitchen and two bedrooms as well as the living room.
5. Lighting
Lighting can make or break the ambience of a period property. Working with the natural light of an interior and combining with placed fixtures and elegant lamps can both accentuate a building’s unique features and create a welcoming atmosphere.
